Ryan and Esmeralda are a couple from Houston, Texas, who have been together for several years and share a love for traveling around the world.

During a trip to Cancun, they decided to take a little escape to Isla Mujeres.

Esmeralda thought it was simply going to be another beautiful day together.

Ryan had other plans.

He had already arranged for a photographer to be there and capture the moment when he would ask her to marry him.

And she had absolutely no idea.

The proposal took place at Punta Sur, one of the most beautiful and dramatic locations in Isla Mujeres.

We planned their session for 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM during the summer, giving us a beautiful window for the proposal and their engagement portraits afterward.

How Do You Keep a Proposal a Surprise?

This is usually the biggest concern when planning a proposal.

You don’t want your girlfriend wondering why you’re suddenly acting differently, checking your phone constantly, or trying to get her to a specific location.

The best approach is to make everything feel like a normal part of your vacation.

On the day of the proposal, Ryan sent me a quick photo of what he was wearing so I could recognize him when they arrived.

From there, I guided the session naturally and waited for the right moment.

Ryan didn’t have to worry about where to stand or when to propose.

He simply enjoyed the moment.

Why Punta Sur Is a Great Place for a Proposal

Punta Sur offers something very different from a typical beach proposal.

Located at the southern tip of Isla Mujeres, it combines dramatic ocean views, rocky cliffs, open skies, and the natural beauty of the Caribbean.

For couples looking for something more scenic and intimate than simply proposing on the beach, Punta Sur can be an incredible choice.

It also gives us the opportunity to create different types of photographs during the same session.

The proposal itself can be captured naturally, followed by portraits around the surrounding landscape.

What Is the Best Time to Propose in Isla Mujeres?

For photography, late afternoon is one of my favorite times for a proposal in Isla Mujeres.

During the summer, a 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM session at Punta Sur gives us a beautiful window for softer evening light while keeping the experience comfortable and relaxed.

The exact light changes throughout the year, so I always recommend planning the timing around the season and the location rather than simply choosing a random hour.

For Ryan and Esmeralda, 6:00 PM was the perfect starting time.

We had enough time to photograph the proposal and then continue with their engagement portraits without rushing.

What Happens After She Says Yes?

Don’t rush away immediately after the proposal.

Take a moment.

Enjoy it.

Then we can use the rest of the session for relaxed engagement photographs around Punta Sur.

These aren’t just photographs of the proposal. They’re the first photographs of you as an engaged couple.

You can walk, laugh, hug, celebrate, and simply enjoy what just happened while I capture those moments naturally.

The nervousness disappears, the surprise is over, and suddenly the session becomes a celebration.
